This is the one most people think they are buying when they pay for a Timanfaya ticket, and are not. Inside the national park, unescorted hiking is banned. The hike across Timanfaya’s volcanic landscapes goes into the adjoining Los Volcanes Natural Park instead — same 1730 eruption, same cinder cones, walking permitted — for about nine kilometres over three hours at a deliberately slow pace, with a geology-led commentary. The four things that catch people out
Timanfaya tickets are online only now. They are tied to a named date and a timed arrival slot, cannot be changed or refunded, and are no longer sold at the gate. Arrive fifteen minutes before your slot. If you are driving yourself, book the slot before you book anything else that day.
“Timanfaya tour” does not always mean Timanfaya entry. Several coach tours drive the park’s perimeter and stop at viewpoints without going through the gate. Read the inclusions list for the words entry or ticket, not just the tour name.
A hike is not a substitute for the park, and the park is not a substitute for a hike. They are different products. The Ruta de los Volcanes is thirty-five minutes of coach through terrain you will never otherwise see; a guided walk is three hours on the ground next door. Plenty of people do both, on different days.
The free walk inside the park exists, but you have to plan for it. The ranger-led Ruta de Tremesana is about three kilometres over three hours, costs nothing, and is limited to groups of eight aged sixteen and up. Places open online exactly one month ahead and go quickly.

How long does the Timanfaya bus tour take?
About thirty-five minutes on the Ruta de los Volcanes itself, with departures roughly every twenty minutes from Islote de Hilario. Allow an hour to ninety minutes on site in total, once you add the geothermal demonstrations and the viewpoints.
Is one day enough to see the volcanoes and the caves?
Yes, on a nine-hour coach tour built for it — the caves are in the north and Timanfaya is in the south-west, so doing both by hire car in a day means a lot of driving and two sets of timed tickets. That is the specific problem the full-day combined tours solve.
